How to Master a DJ Mix
Mastering a Mix Is Different From Mastering a Track
When you master a single track, you're working with one consistent piece of audio. The dynamics, frequency balance, and energy are all designed by one producer. Your job is to polish it - bring out the best, fix any issues, and hit the right loudness target.
A DJ mix is different. You're mastering a sequence of tracks that were never meant to sit next to each other. Track A might be bass-heavy minimal techno. Track B might be treble-forward progressive house. The transition between them is where things get tricky.
The Key Decisions
1. Treat It as One Continuous Track
The most common mistake is mastering each track individually before mixing. Don't. Master the exported mix as a single file. This lets you:
- Balance the frequency spectrum across the whole mix
- Smooth out energy differences between tracks
- Catch problems at transitions
2. EQ for Consistency, Not Perfection
You're not trying to make every track sound identical. You're trying to make the flow feel consistent. If one track has too much bass and the next has too little, the listener notices the shift - not the individual tracks.
A gentle high-pass or low-shelf adjustment can smooth these transitions without changing the character of each track.
3. Compression: Glue, Not Crush
Light compression across the mix helps glue the tracks together. The goal is to reduce the dynamic range just enough that the quiet parts don't feel disconnected from the loud parts.
Heavy compression kills the energy that makes a mix work. Use it sparingly.
4. Loudness Target: -14 LUFS
Most streaming platforms normalize to around -14 LUFS. If your mix is louder than that, it gets turned down. If it's quieter, it stays quiet.

5. True Peak Limiting
Standard peak meters miss inter-sample peaks - spikes that happen between digital samples and cause distortion on playback. A true peak limiter catches these.

- EQ - gentle corrections, not creative moves
